Amidst this time of stress and busyness, it is easy to lose track of the positive aspects of our life, but as we studied in our Happiness and Meaning project, expressing gratitude can increase your own well-being and helps you keep it all in perspective.

3. Work on Sense of Place essay refinements

4. If you are ahead of the game, feel free to get started on the
DP Update for our Energy and Place project (Due Monday, 5/23 E.O.C-- note the change in deadline!).

Starter #39
1.
VISUAL PIECE for exhibition: If you haven't already, open the assignment I emailed you in GOOGLE CLASSROOM to send me a copy of your visual piece.  Attach the file  and send it to me VIA that GOOGLE CLASSROOM assignment.  If you are reading your Happiness and Meaning philosophy, you need to send me your visual piece for that. If you are reading your Sense of Place essay, send me an image that best captures your sense of place or the main idea of your writing piece.

2. WRITING SKILLZ:  Review the folder of writing issue mini-lessons:  https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B2QC-culCKvHQjF6cjk4cktwUzA&usp=sharing&tid=0B2QC-culCKvHZ0psLXdPZ1ZkZkk
Directions:
  • Take this time to peruse the folder that contains handouts on various writing issues that were common in the first drafts of your essay.  Skim the titles and read over a couple handouts on the skills you most need to develop in your writing.
  • Write down which writing issues you need to focus the most on and pledge to use these as a resource when editing your sense of place writing piece this week

3. Have you written your abstract for your sense of place piece yet? It's pretty simple and should be a paragraph at the top of your paper....

Directions for the Abstract:
Your essay must include an abstract that explains how you are defining sense of place according to the categories of sense of place (what type of relationship and/or community attachment do you show in the essay) and what your environmental ethic is. Your abstract should include a quote from your essay that best shows both of these components.

Class Biz
  • For exhibition, you need to be an audience member in the room you are scheduled in for the block of time you are scheduled!   Exhibition Schedule. There may be some changes as to which room you are in between Jmac's and mine, so check the schedule before exhibition night!
  • Remember to save evidence of peer critique and submit that WITH your final draft on Friday, end of class.
  • If you missed peer critique yesterday, you need to make it up using the protocol with two critiquers!

Agenda
1. Ashley gives an overview of the plan for exhibition set-up  and seeks volunteers for the following roles (5 minutes)
  • Design team
  • Hunters and Gatherers
  • Elves

2. Design team meet to create your vision for exhibition (10-? minutes)
  • Sketch it out.
  • Assign items to gather to hunter and gatherer team.
  • Decide how much time we need to set-up. Begin setting up today or tomorrow?

3. Rehearse your reading for Exhibition (30 minutes)
  • Plan your introduction: EXAMPLE: Hello, my name is_________________. This is my happiness and meaning philosophy statement, expressed in the form of a poem. In it, I express the belief that one's happiness is comprised of....."
  • Time yourself reading it aloud (you should not take more than 5 minutes total for your intro and reading)
  • Practice in front of a group of friends. Get feedback.

4. Sense of Place Writing Work Time (rest of class time)
  • If you missed peer critique yesterday, it is your responsibility to make it up with two editors using yesterday's protocol in order for me to accept it on Friday.

STARTER:
  • File--> Make a copy of this helpful document of all remaining deadlines!
  • Read page 1
  • Fill out the second page with your plan for work time this week based on the deadlines!
  • Share it with Ashley upon completion

Class Biz
  • Go over any questions y'all have about assignments/
  • Ashley to explain vision for Exhibition and clarify the Google classroom assignment:  If you haven't already, open the assignment I emailed you in GOOGLE CLASSROOM to send me a copy of your visual piece.
  • Establishing peer critique groups: Who has a draft ready for peer critique? You MUST have your draft critiqued before you submit it to me on Friday, so today is ideally when you'd do that otherwise you're on your own for finding a group and completing today's protocol.
  • Have you written your abstract for your sense of place piece yet? It's pretty simple and should be a paragraph at the top of your paper....

Directions for the Abstract:
Your essay must include an abstract that explains how you are defining sense of place according to the categories of sense of place (what type of relationship and/or community attachment do you show in the essay) and what your environmental ethic is. Your abstract should include a quote from your essay that best shows both of these components.

AGENDA
1. Peer Critique Protocol
  • Ashley will read over it first!
  • ****If you aren't ready for critique today, download the protocol document and copy and paste it to the bottom of your current sense of place draft for later use.
  • Highlight the 2 categories on the rubric you think you need the most help with and write a "focusing question" that you'd like your group to help you answer (i.e. "Is my sense of place clear? How can I integrate my environmental ethic more smoothly? I hate the way I describe this setting-- how can I improve it?")
  • Get into groups and select time keeper
  • Begin protocol

2. Refine your sense of place writing once done with peer critique
