Driving Questions: What do we want 10th grade advisory to look and feel like? What norms and values do we want to guide our time together? Why are we doing this? We are doing this in order to create an advisory experience that is enjoyable to you all (at least most of the time) and that is driven more by your own interests! Norms v. Values Distinction Norms: Socially-accepted codes of conduct set by a community/group/society Values: Beliefs an individual has to guide his/her behavior *Typically a value underlies a norm. For instance, if we implement the norm that everyone must raise their hand, we might value equal participation, calmness, structure. If we set a norm that we do appreciations at the end of each week, we must value appreciation and the expression of gratitude, etc.... NORMS Values mean nothing until the rubber hits the road. Unless you show it in action, can you really say that you truly value it?
Structuring advisory Based on our values/norms, how do we want to structure advisory on a monthly basis? Example: 1st Wednesday of the month is an outside sport/game (chosen and led by two of you, rotating leaders); 2nd advisory of the month might be grade-check (We still need to do this!) and study hall time; 3rd advisory might be.... etc..... Or we spend an entire month planning a community service activity we end up doing as an advisory, etc.. |
