1. What are you specifically trying to accomplish during work time today?  Here are your options:
  • Honors Rhetorical Analysis Essay thesis statement (due Friday, end of day)
  • Test Corrections (review the guidelines from Tuesday's Blog). These are due Tuesday, 10/10.
  • Ryan: Turning video footage into youtube for We Are All Homeless's social media
  • Volunteer: Thank you card for Willie
  • LAST option would be classwork in another class.

2.  What support do you need from Ashley or resources more broadly (i.e. Justice book, powerpoint on philosophies, Ashley's honors page and thesis statement handout) to be successful?

Quote of the day/project???

“Do you want to remain only in your own perspective? Evaluating the world only through your own perspective? It comes to relationships. How do we change relationship to place? How do we expand what we know? And how do we know what we know? We need to be willing to be uncomfortable to take a risk, reading more wildly, widely.” -Unknown

10:20-11:00: Work Time
11:00-11:10: Break
11:10-12:02: Title Voting and Issue Research (see below)

Issue Research:  We'll get into 4 focus groups based on your interest on Homelessness, Addiction, Mental Health and Immigrant Rights
  • Come together as a FOCUS group and discuss what might be the best resources to answer the four research questions.
  • The end goal of this will be for each group to create a poster like the example on the white board and do a sales pitch to the rest of the class at the beginning of 4th period TOMORROW on why we should choose your issue.
  • Here are the four research questions:
  1. What are all the aspects of the problem as it pertains to Durango?
  2. What community organizations AND/OR groups of people are working on this issue and/or trying to solve this issue already?
  3. HOW are they doing that? What are current solutions in the mix in Durango?
  4. Which groups of people are affected by this issue in Durango? Think broadly about this!
Afternoon Class
12:50-1:30: Work Time
1:30-1:40 Break
1:40-2:30: Title Voting and Homelessness Mind Mapping Activity

Title Voting!  You get to place up to 3 check marks next to the title you like best. Have another idea? Add it?

Homelessness Problems Mind-Map Activity (whole class)
  • Volunteer to take photos of our whiteboard notes and email them to me?
  • Let's try to identify all the various PROBLEMS related to homelessness.
  • Now, on PINK sticky note, write the sub-problem that you'd like to work on most. and YOUR NAME
  • Now, on a BLUE sticky note, write your 2nd choice sub-problem and YOUR NAME.
  • Stick those up on the white board next to the sub-problems

Focus Groups
Get together with your group and discuss the next steps in our process.
  • Create a SHARED google document and title it "Focus Group Research".
  • Share it with Ashley too.
  • Elect a note-taker for today
  • Write down your thoughts to the following questions:
  1. What would be credible resources ONLINE to research?
  2. What would be credible resources/people/organizations in our community to reach out to?
  3. What specific research questions do you have as a group?
  4. How should you divide up the work EVENLY to answer these questions and pull from the community resources?  Assign individuals to specific research tasks.
  5. How should Ashley grade your research? What would EXCELLENT research and notes look like?  Things to address:
  • Diversity of resources used
  • Credibility of resources
  • Citations (should you cite your sources?)
  • Organization of notes: How should you organize your notes as a group? As individuals?
  • Quantity of research-- how much research is "enough"?
  • Depth of understanding on your issue
  • Should Ashley use a standard rubric? Should this be self-assessed with conferences with Ashley to determine your grade?
