Starter (on a notecard!)
Read the bit about similes and meataphors on the handout on elements of nature writing (pages 3 and 4 this time on the online version).

On the notecard I give you in class, do the following:
1. Write your name at the top.
2. Write a simile or metaphor that works to change the reader's perspective on something, ideally that you are or will be describing in your own sense of place essay.
3. Do you have questions/confusions about any of the following:
  • Sense of place (specifically on the categories of sense of place we covered yesterday)
  • What I mean by "how does energy production impact place?"
  • The Grand Style and other elements of nature writing
  • Using active verbs to make your writing more vivid
  • Any of the following environmental ethics: Sustainability, Conservationism, Preservationism, Innovation, the Land Ethic, Environmental Justice, Intrinsic value, instrumental value, anthropocentricism.

POWERPOINT ON NATURE WRITING: Helpful additional source if you need it.

Agenda
Minilessons!!!!
1. How to structure a personal essay:
  • Powerpoint with examples (last slides from yesterday's intro to sense of place ppt)
  • Basic handout with structure and additional tips

2. Past Student Examples Critique
In your google doc of starters....
Select one of the student examples listed below to read and as you do, jot down notes in your starters that answer these questions:
  • What is this student's environmental ethic? WHERE do they best reveal it (quote it)
  • What seems to be their type of RELATIONSHIP or ATTACHMENT to sense of place (category of sense of place-- see white board)
  • Does he/she use elements of the “Grand Style” to SHOW the place to the reader?  (at least two of the following should be present: metaphor, simile, analogy, alliteration, assonance, onomatopoeia, sensory images like sight, taste, touch, sound, smell).  QUOTE TWO examples from the writing and explain which element of the Grand Style it uses.
  • Overall, what is your reaction to this piece? Do you like it? What specifically do you like? What questions did it raise for you?

PAST STUDENT EXAMPLES
  • Science Fiction Short Story (life in a biodome)
  • Personal Essay format
  • Poem #1
  • Poem #2
  • Creative piece- Survival Guide for finding your sense of place
  • Personal Essay (about kayaking and the river)
  • Short Story: Environmental Justice, Clouds, Native American protagonist
  • Steve Jobson's personal essay about a road trip with his dad

3. Work time! Brainstorm, begin writing, conference with Ashley, conference with classmates, journal, etc....

**If you're writing a poem and want to watch an example of a poem with a clear environmental ethic, check this one out: "Dear Future Generations: Sorry" by Prince Ea
