Starter #47

Respond to the following quote.....

"Believe those who are seeking the truth. Doubt those who find it."
—André Gide

Possible response prompts:
  • Why should you believe seekers and doubt those who find truth?
  • Do you agree?
  • How do you decide what is "true"?
  • How does this relate to your own perspective on your political issue? How might it influence your research and writing for your op-ed?  How might it influence your approach to our coffee house?
(22 November 1869 – 19 February 1951)  Gide was a French author and winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1947 "for his comprehensive and artistically significant writings, in which human problems and conditions have been presented with a fearless love of truth and keen psychological insight".

Class Biz
  • Sign up for exhibition roles
  • Ashley to go over class art supplies

Agenda
1. Read this article called, "I don't want to be Right" and mark it up with your questions and reactions, thinking specifically about the implications of this article on your own beliefs on your political issue AND other issues.

2. Seminar on the article
  • Describe the research question Professor Brendan Nyhan sought to answer with his 2014 Vaccine study
  • What do the results from this study reveal about people and their beliefs?
  • Why do you think people's ideologies are so tied up to their identity and self-worth?
  • What beliefs do you hold that when challenged make you defensive and might be tied to your identity?
  • How does this affect your perspective on our Morality and Politics of Justice Project (your own political issue opinion, trying to persuade other people, our coffee house exhibition, etc...)
  • How might this article affect how you seek information and form opinions in the future?
  • How does this article relate to our starter quote? If you are always seeking truth, do you never take a stand? Are you therefore identity-less?

3. Part 2 Project Work Time
  • Review the checklist for the project (page 3 of this document)
  • Submit PART 2 project proposal (by the end of class)
  1. Political Campaign visual piece project proposal
  2. Option 2 project proposal
  • Conference with Ashley  about your op-ed or your project
  • Make a list of the supplies that you would need to work on your project and bring them in!
  • Read Ashley's feedback on your op-ed if you submitted it before Thanksgiving and begin refining.
  • Do more research on your political issue!
