Today's Learning Goals
  • Understand the goals for our Native American Historical Inquiry mini-project
  • Engage in historical research to better understand a contemporary poem

Starter:
Read this poem: http://bibliosity.blogspot.com/2008/11/crazy-horse-speaks.html
and take 10 minutes to jot down responses to these questions: 
  • What historical content do you think this is referring to? 
  • What questions do you have about this poem, its significance?
  • What people/places/events do you think you need to research/study to better understand this poem’s meaning?
  • Can you formulate any interpretations of this poem right now? Quote a passage from the poem and make an interpretive claim about its significance.

Announcements:
  • DP Updates were due today-- New students, send  your link to Dusty so he can put it on the website
  • Honors lunch meeting on Wednesday
  • Expect project grades to be returned to you within 2 weeks max.

Agenda
1. Guest Speaker: Avra Saslow presenting her honors research project (20 minutes)

2. Silently, read the project description and discuss questions as a class (10 minutes)

3. Group work interpreting "Crazy Horse Speaks" (30 minutes)
  • Take turns sharing your starter responses
  • One group member open up the google document 
  • Make a copy and share it with all of your group members AND Ashley
  • Divvy up research on the people/places/events and do some research on those things.

4. Whole class discussions:  What new understandings do you have about the poem? What further questions do you have? (10 minutes)


5.  Watch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_nxRvt5Rjx8 (6 minutes)

6. Familiarize ourselves with the project resources google doc folder on my DP (2 minutes)

7. Time to begin reading chapter 1 of Howard Zinn (30 minutes)
