Monday, January 6th: Welcome Back!

1/6/2014

Objective:
  • Pull main arguments from the required readings and annotations that will both help and hurt your team's case in order to review the readings and historical/legal content relevant to the mock trial
  • Understand what strict scrutiny is and how the Defense and Prosecution might spin it to help their case

Starter:
In the next 10 minutes, write down as much as you can remember about the required readings that were due before break and "The Final Report" (due today).  You might try to summarize each article as best you can.  After 5 minutes, if you're still struggling, you may use your readings.
  • "A Jap's a Jap"
  • Civilian Exclusion Order no 34
  • Executive Order 9066
  • Korematsu v. U.S. (1944) The original Supreme Court judges' ruling (required for lawyers and judges only)
  • The Final Report

Agenda
1.  Your feedback from midpoint project survey + Go Over the Conferencing Schedule with Ashley

2. Review Strict Scrutiny: In your starters, complete this chart
Today's power point

3.  Review the above list of readings as a team and pull out main arguments for and against the defense and prosecution's case

4. As a team, review your new January trial calendar and the "checklist for turning stuff in" handout in your team folder
  • Time manager:  Hand out a copy of the calendar to each teammate. Go through the calendar and read aloud the daily objectives for in class work time.  Circle assignment deadlines as well (make a note of these in your planners if needed).
  • Organizer:  Refer your group members to the "checklist for turning stuff in" AND on the second page the template for organizing witness/lawyer Q and A located in your team's folder.  Lawyers and direct-examination witnesses, this week you'll work together to fill in the template as a shared google doc. Witnesses, you'll need one of these for both your direct examination AND anticipated cross-examination.
  • Spokesperson:  Ask Ashley any questions your group may have about the rest of trial prep time requirements

5. Work time!
