Objectives:
1. Understand the big picture goals of our next project.
2.  Understand the basic idea of Existentialism

STARTER #1

Instructions for your starters for this semester:  On the SAME google doc as last semester, write "Second Semester". ABOVE that, write "Starter #1".  Please put the MOST recent starter at the top of the doc each day.

Watch  Alan Watts' youtube video: "What is it you desire?"  then Write for 10 minutes on the following prompts: 
  • What is the purpose of your existence?  
  • What gives your life meaning?
  • How do you define happiness?

Class Biz
  • Honors Ind. Study meeting Wednesday at lunch
  • January 7 (yes, this Thursday!) is a day for seniors and juniors to get ready for next steps.  Alumni panel, surviving college workshops, etc.  More details to come!​

AGENDA
1. Introduction to our next project, "Happiness and Meaning"
  • Read and discuss project description
  • Quick tutorial on how to find all project resources on my dp
  • Introductory power point: Short film, Journal Prompt, Ashley's forays with post-college angst

2. Ashley's introduction to our next book: The Stranger, by Albert Camus
  • Check out a book
  • Plot overview and context to the book
  • Annotation Handout (required to participate in our seminar next week)
  • Read aloud the first few pages and discuss the main character's personality
  • Go over the timeline for reading

Timeline for reading The Stranger
*All deadlines mean by the beginning of class.  I will give you at least 20-30 minutes of in-class reading time at the end of class each day. 
  • By Tuesday: Read Chs. 1 and 2 (22 pages)
  • By Wednesday:  Read Chs. 3, 4, 5 (22 pages)
  • By Friday: Read Chs. 6 and in Part II, chs. 1 and 2 (32 pages)
  • By Monday, 1/11:  Read Part II, chs 3 and 4 (26 pages)
  • By Tuesday, 1/12: Finish the book! (15 pages)

3.  Begin the Existentialism Powerpoint presentation (Time pending- may push this to tomorrow).

4. Time to begin reading The Stranger
