Today's Today's Objectives
  • Develop a list of questions to guide our #AnimasRiverSpill project
  • Learn the difference between perspective and bias and evaluate the perspective and/or biases of various "voices from the Animas"
  • Understand what StoryCorps' mission

Today's Pre-Starter Logistics
1. Turn in your signed syllabus, shared classroom materials and "I'm more than just a pretty face"

2. Bookmark these two websites:
  • classroom.google.com
  • ashleyhumanities11.weebly.com

3. Join my google classroom! 
  • Accept my invite from the email I sent
  • OR logon to classroom.google.com and join my classroom by entering code o8mwir (to do this, click the + sign on the top right corner of your google classroom start page)

4. Open the first assignment, read it, and follow the instructions. Ask Ashley if you have any questions or confusions. 

5. If you're done early, write me a funny/thoughtful/though-provoking message. Feel free to link pictures or videos that you think will make me leap for joy.

STARTER #3
  1. SATIRE: the use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people's stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues.
  2. As a class, we'll watchConan O'Brien's satire of the Animas River spill. Warning: There is some strong language here. Earmuffs, kids!
  3. After watching, answer these two questions in your starter doc:
  • What is your reaction to this satirical play on the Animas River spill?
  • What perspective is exaggerated in this satire?

1. Quickly review our first project: "Lives Streaming: Voices from the Animas"
  • Project Overview doc
  • Gold King Mine (Map, date of establishment: 1894)

2.  Finish thegroup brainstorm we started on Friday in small groups!

3. Whole class activity: Analyzing perspective v. bias in Dan Olson's commentary on the #AnimasRiverSpill


4. What is StoryCorps' mission? Let's listen to an example StoryCorps podcast!
  • Episode  436: "Great Escapes"
  • Does this podcast fulfill the mission of StoryCorps?  In what ways? What was its impact on you?

5. Classroom layout orientation:
  • Teatime: When to use, how to use it, request for tea and mugs!
  • Recycling center
  • Classroom library: How do you check books out? 
  • Turning in work: Where do you do that? What should you make sure is on the assignment?
  • Shared classroom supplies: What types of supplies do I have available for students to use?
