Goal:
  • Understand these important elements of personal essay: Authentic Voice, Narrative Coherence and Communal Appeal
  • Choose and define your belief for the essay

EQ:  What do I believe and why?

Starter
1. Set out your class materials for me to check
  • Binder with dividers and lined paper
  • Notebook for starters/freewrites
  • Shared material
  • Writing device + highlighter
  • Daily planner 

2. Brainstorm a list of the 5 most formative moments in your life. Here is my list


Agenda
1.  Share your strongest belief from the brainstorm homework AND 1-2 "moments" from your Starter . Also, check-in with your partner about the experience of having his/her parents complete the survey.
               
2.  What are literary devices? Make a list of as many as you know (think back to Lori's poetry project!)

3. PERSONAL Essay Writing Criteria: PPT
  • Critique: "Always Go to the Funeral"

4.  Credo Assignment
  • Read the above handout and select a line from one of the examples that is the most powerful illustration/expression of that author's belief.  
  • Ashley's Tips for choosing your belief:
  1. Write down your top three beliefs
  2. Think of a personal experience/story that best illustrates how you formed that belief
  3. Consider looking up the definition to all three beliefs and even writing a short credo for all three.  Whichever one you feel most passionate about or inspired by should be the one to write your essay on.

5. Guest speakers: Last year's honors students  (9:45-10:15, 12:05-12:35)
