Today's Goal: 
  • Articulate one of your core beliefs
  • Develop criteria for a good personal essay
  • Understand these important elements of personal essay: Authentic Voice, Narrative Coherence and Communal Appeal

EQ: What makes a strong personal essay?
 
Starter:  
  • Turn in your signed syllabus and email me the "Student Listening" homework
  • Read the three student examples from last night's homework and respond in your notebook:  Why would I select these as student examples?  How would you evaluate your own effort on this assignment?  

 Agenda
1. Read the  TIB essay assignment description

2. 
Finish yesterday's PPT from yesterday  (from slide 6) in order to articulate a core belief.
  • Personal Essay v. Transactive Writing handout
  • "Things I've Learned in Life" 


3. Share last night's "listening activity" in groups of 2-3
  •  Share your responses w/ partner (# 3 only- the summary of core belief)
  • Compare the voices of the two authors-  how do their personalities or perspectives differ? If you were to meet them at a party or exhibition, what might they sound like or act like? 
  •  Select ONE sentence from both authors that shows this contrast and captures each author’s unique voice

4. Go over homework: Brainstorm and Inspiration Handout and brainstorm additional belief statements
