This was you right after your mom woke you up this morning, right?
Today's Objectives:
  • Evaluate Krishnamurti's philosophy on the purpose of education
  • Create a class charter that may or may not be inspired by his ideas
  • Begin to get to know what Ashley's Humanities 11 class is all about

Starter #1
  1. What do you think the "function" or purpose of education SHOULD be?
  2. Does Animas achieve your ideal vision? Why or why not?*
  3. When you're done, make a name tent like Ashley's (keep this through Monday)
*If you are a new student, you may either write about whether what you know about Animas achieve that vision or talk about your former school

Agenda
1. Share your starter response with a partner

2. Introductions

3. Read and discuss "The Function of Education" by Krishnamurti
  • Mark quotes that stand out to you as thought-provoking, interesting, inspiring or with which you strongly disagree.
  • Identify the author's thesis: What does Krishnamurti claim the purpose of education is?
  • Be prepared to share your selections and explain what the quotes mean to you and why you chose them.

4. Small group discussion

  • Clarify any confusions you have about the reading
  • Share your FAVORITE line from the reading
  • Discuss what you think the thesis is

5. Whole group discussion and class charter creation
  • What questions do you still have about this reading?
  • What is the thesis?
  • Does Animas create an environment where this is possible? Should we be aspiring to?
  • Let's create our class charter! What are the norms we want to uphold in order to create an ideal classroom environment where everyone can learn.

6. Class Charter
  • 5 minute free-write:  Come up with as many norms/values and policies as you can that you think leads to the BEST class culture and learning environment.
  • Groups of 4: Chunk/categorize and narrow your lists to come up with the top 5 Norms and top 5 Policies that you think are most important.
  • Combined groups: Share out and repeat previous process. You can only keep 5!
  • Share out as whole class: Create class charter.
