Today's Learning Goal

Understand the issues of homelessness as seen through the eyes of Durango City Council members and learn about what solutions they are working on.

Starter

Please come up with some questions for Melissa and Chris for our panel. These could be your focus group's research questions OR other questions you may have specific to Durango City Council's work on homelessness.

Agenda

11am and 1pm: City Council Panel with Melissa Youseff and Chris Bettin

Work Time Goals today:
  • Morning class: Let's mind-map the issues related to homelessness and then get into focus research groups.  SEE BELOW FOR DIRECTIONS ON FOCUS GROUP RESEARCH TIME!
  • Afternoon class: First, we'll review  THIS RUBRIC for your research, then get together with your focus group and come up with a system for organizing your research notes (if you don't want to receive ONE group grade, be sure to break it up into individual student's notes) then start researching answers to your group's questions!

Morning Class Focus Group Research Time Directions

Get together with your group and discuss the next steps in our process.
  • Create a SHARED google document and title it "Focus Group Research".
  • Share it with Ashley too.
  • Elect a note-taker for today
  • Write down your thoughts to the following questions:
  1. What would be credible resources ONLINE to research?
  2. What would be credible resources/people/organizations in our community to reach out to?
  3. What specific research questions do you have as a group?
  4. How should you divide up the work EVENLY to answer these questions and pull from the community resources?  Assign individuals to specific research tasks.
  5. Review THIS RUBRIC on the research process of this project and then comment in the margins on any changes you'd like to see me make to the rubric.
