Seminar Prep Part II: Analysis- Take notes on a shared google doc that you SHARE with Ashley too: Feel free to make a copy of THIS template to organize your notes: https://docs.google.com/a/animashighschool.com/document/d/1xkiYy1D4mZ2LM4YwhBnSfZL0HuCOP2gWWc4tTDtkU1g/edit 1. Share ONE example from EACH of the 4 categories of annotation from above (A-D). Write down the quote and page #. 2. Select one quote from Abbey that you think is the best description of a place. Why do you like this passage? Write the quote down here and explain why you like it. 3. What are Abbey’s environmental ethics? Pick a quote that best supports your analysis. 4. What characteristics or adjectives does he ascribe to certain places? How does this reveal his perspective or feelings about these places? Think about how he describes such places as the inside of his trailer compared to the landscape of Arches compared to Hoboken, NJ, etc.. 5. Discuss your discussion questions that you selected while annotating. Part III: Critique- WITH A PARTNER (ON THE SAME GOOGLE DOC!) 1. Does Abbey do a good job of using sensory images like sight, taste, sound, touch, smell as well as metaphor, simile and analogy to paint a vivid picture of place for his readers? Why or why not? 2. Do you agree with Abbey’s ideas about the relationship between man and nature (or technology/progress and wilderness?) Why or why not? 3. Do you agree with his sense of environmental ethics? Why or why not?

Starter Read the handout on elements of nature writing (page 1 and 2 only for online version) and answer the questions on the backside at the bottom of page #2. POWERPOINT ON NATURE WRITING: Helpful additional source if you need it. Agenda Ed Abbey reading/annotating Work Time Goal:
1. Understand what sense of place means and see examples of how writers and filmmakers define and describe sense of place. 2. Familiarize yourself with some frameworks of "sense of place" as characterized by relationships to place and community attachments. STARTER: Ted Talk "Why Stay in Chernobyl? Because It's Home" AGENDA 1. Intro to Sense of Place powerpoint 2. Read the Categories of Sense of Place: Relationships to Place and Community Attachments and circle the attachments/relationships that most connect to your relationship/attachment to place and community. PAIR SHARE: Explain your selection(s) and why you chose it/them. 3. Sense of Place Essays from Orion Magazine TOGETHER: Read "Traverse City, MI"
4. JOURNAL #9 complete steps 1 and 2 below: Step 1: READ AT LEAST 2 MORE essays yourself, asking the same questions of each. (Which of the categories of sense of place seem to apply here? What sort of relationship to the place does the author have? How would you characterize his/her community attachment?) Does the author reveal his/her environmental ethic? Note your connections and observations in your journal. Suggested reads: Sioux Falls, SD The Backcountry The Bluffs: Pacific Palisades, CA Oakland, CA Silverton, CO Step 2: Name this portion of your journal after a place, such as in the titles of the Orion essays. Write about that place with details that attempt to reveal either the nature of your relationship with the place, your community attachment to the place, or both. 4. Starter/Journal #8: Observation! •The foundation of writing is observation. Take ten minutes to observe yourself and what’s happening in your life right now, and write down what you see. Be curious, gentle, and willing to laugh. Allow yourself to daydream and go on tangents. Negative or positive direction is fine. Feel free to explore a particular story. Questions to consider: –Where are you right now? –How do you feel? How does your body feel? –What kind of a day/week have you had? –What is preoccupying you? –Did something interesting or unusual happen to you this week? –What did it make you think about? –What are some of the small things you’ve noticed recently? –What are you super excited about? –Who is someone who has brightened your day/week/month? –What are you struggling with? –Did a reaction or a way you behaved recently surprise you?
